Responding to today’s net migration figures, Global Future Director, Peter Starkings said:
“Theresa May is leaving Downing Street because the reality never matched her rhetoric – and nowhere is that more true than on immigration. Over nine years at the Home Office and No 10 her absurd net migration target has been a disaster – setting the tone for policy which has harmed Britain and helped to corrode public trust in politics and government.
“Today’s statistics show that migration for work continues to fall, now to levels not seen since 2013. Immigration from the EU is falling fast, which means fewer people coming to Britain to do vital work in our struggling NHS and social care systems. More employers are having to rely on a non-EU immigration system that is not fit for purpose. This government’s anti-immigration rhetoric is already hurting the UK economy, and the planned end to free movement would make matters even worse – so it’s urgent that whoever replaces the Prime Minister abandons those plans and recognises the huge benefits immigration has brought to our country.”
